BOX/SCULPTURE/TABLE/BODY

This modular box, made from a 4x8 piece of plywood, functions as both an art object and a design object. The box consists of four individual pieces which are cut with corresponding slits so that they may fit together as one cohesive object without the use of screws or adhesives. Because of its modular design, it can take on many different shapes and configurations. The holes cut on two of the sides welcome and imply the body’s engagement with the object, cultivating a relationship between body, object, and its role in shaping the movement of space. There is a fifth piece of wood involved as well, which can function as a table-top in some configurations, or simply as another segment of the box’s sculptural qualities. For aesthetic purposes and to not appear as aggressive in its cubism, the surfaces are heavily sanded as well as the corners, allowing for the human body’s haptic engagement to be a pleasant one. This box explores self-sufficiency and the model of a contained organism, as it holds itself together through a reflexive reliance on its body/bodies.
